What to do to travel more often for less?

Updated: Nov 4, 2018

First of all forget about full time job, if you have one and you wish to keep it do not take anything with less than 5 weeks of holidays a year besides the Christmas and New Years Eve.

I have few hacks that might be useful for you to save up money, travel in your free time and see more.

London

Number one : JOB

If you are thinking of full time travelling, full time job might not be for you. But you think to yourself its safe and it gives you the money. And money is what we all need, right? Well, there are some other ways around it.

You can become an online English tutor ! You can travel the world and at the same time earn money from teaching regardless of the place you in at the moment. Don't worry if English is not your strongest asset, you could always improve it with different courses like for instance TEFL teaching English as a Foreign Language. If you have a University degree you could also potentially help others with different subjects including Science and Maths. If you good at writing essays you can also help and get income by checking them or helping to write them.

But teaching English is not the only option...

If you love photography you could also become a creative. There is plenty of things you could do grow your following on Instagram, set up a blog if you also passionate about writing, create a youtube channel , sell images to various stock websites, create a page on facebook and so on. There is plenty of ways to express your creativeness and eventually you might even earn enough money to drop out from your day to day job and start travelling full time. There's something you must know you won't see the income straight away, so if you really not passionate about it. Don't do it ! Because it will eventually become painful as you won't see any results for amount of work you put in. Being creative needs plenty of patience and you have to be aware of a high competition...

Next on to do list is... look for jobs with 0 hour contract. As those are the ones with most flexible schedule and you get to travel how much you want without being told off. If you are a positive, open and not scared to talk to people Sales Job might be your dream come true. From the Commission and Basic Salary you can earn the same amount of money in a week as you earn in a year. Plus you get to travel a lot around the country while working ( for free) .

And finally if you Love your Full Time job and you wish to stay where you are. There is absolutely no shame about it, its rather great to hear you found something you love. But still you wish to travel a lot? First of take weekends off and go on a road trip around the country, you might think its boring but you can be extremely surprised. Some of my road trips turn out to be an ultimate success. Although if you wish to travel abroad you can. Make sure to check the dates before you take off, not to get yourself caught up in a pricy high season, choose the dates that are less popular - you could go to few places for the same amount of money as you would go in high season to one.

Number two: CHOOSE YOUR TRANSPORT CAREFULLY

If you want to save money while travelling choosing the right transport is VERY IMPORTANT. Always do your research beforehand.

First of all try to avoid car rentals, as convenient as it sounds it might be a great thing in one country but a catastrophe in another, f ex going to Italy and renting a car there might be quite tricky because of the Telepass ( quick way for paying road toll for locals). You might pass it without realising and end up with a massive penalty few months after that. Also the most popular cities to go to have a congestion charge zone that you should be aware of and check beforehand. Also drivers, every country has its own rules and ...drivers. In Malta for instance people driving is quite chaotic but they tend to know what they are doing after all. If you are not strong in driving and you rather calm behind the wheel prepare yourself and do your research before renting a car, also make sure you know where you renting your car from and I advise to insure it, not be held responsible for small scratches and dents.

As we all know using public transport might not be the most comfortable experience and against popular opinion it might not be the cheapest one.

Again do your research before going f.ex if you are planning on travelling to London Public Transport is quite tricky , first of if you are planning on travelling by tube it might be really hot during the summer and really cold during winter, fully packed and VERY expensive. You end up spending loads on transport and you won't be able to get everywhere with it. The way to save up money is to think like a local, get yourself an Oyster card. You will have to pay a refundable deposit but it will save you up some coins.

Next option is a bike (motorbike to be precise) if you are travelling to a warm island I think its the best of all the options. It will get you anywhere you want, its cheap to rent and maintain and the parking for you is everywhere. Its a win win , the only issue with this form of transportation is comfort. It might not be comfortable for a longer journeys.. so again it depends where you go.

Travelling by cheap airways can actually make you save up more than you expect. Choose the flight before you choose the date of your holiday it works wonders.

To sum up : choose the transport equivalently to the country you are travelling to !

Number three: WHERE TO REST?

Hotel or a Hostel ? Or else...

First of if you want to relax in hotels with all inclusive its okay just be smart about it. Try to look for a full package deals -off season. You be suprised to find a pearl in a hay slope.

But hey there are also hostels- first of if you are travelling on your own its great. You have a chance to meet new people and save up loads of money. However, if you are a couple hotel might be a cheaper and more comfortable option as you share the price for a room rather than paying for two separate beds in one dormitory. Be careful with your personal belongings in a hostel! Life is unfortunately not full of love and flowers...

Next thing ..something outside of the box, rent yourself a cabin ( small lodge) on the outskirts of a big city or national park. You have a great opportunity to explore nature, have privacy and spend less money.

Lastly if you are willing to become a full on explorer with a small budget sleep in the car ! Yes you heard me well, car might not be the most comfortable option but you can make it a bed with a few pillows and a blanket, you could also use extra materials to cover up the windows. Apart from that depending on where you going to, you can find plenty of petrol stations having a free shower for travellers, you could also sleep on the station to remain safe. You can save up loads and travel a lot in a short period of time.

There is much more I could potentially add, but this post is too long already so I will wrap it up , let me know if you want more..#happytravels
